Trunk’s greatest secret has finally been revealed by Dragon Ball Super in Chapter 90 of the most recent manga: that is, that he has a superhero alter ego! The current Dragon Ball Super manga story arc is actually a prequel to last year’s Dragon Ball Super: Superhero movie, in which we are learning much more background information about Dr. Hedo, his work on creating the next generation of androids, and more about the current state of affairs on Earth while Goku and Vegeta have been away fighting to defend Universe 7 from ongoing threats. Trunks and Goten have both transitioned into their various adolescent years and begun attending high school as a part of that new status quo. The two half-Saiyans have also been taking advantage of their amazing fighting abilities to moonlight as the heroes Great Saiyaman X-1 (Trunks) and Saiyaman X-2 (Goten).
In this pivotal part of the arc, Goten and Trunks successfully locate Hedo and prosecute him. The two boys enlist the aid of Mai, a classmate and Trunk’s significant crush, to help them find them. Trunks and Hedo’s mutual fanboy music infatuation, CleanGod, is performing at the high school dance, and Hedo crashes the event to make the whole thing personal. Hedo and his androids manage to flee and steal back the data disc case that Goten and Trunks had initially taken from Hedo despite Krillin and the police arriving; Mai leaving with her own vigilante plot; and both of Goten and Trunks present.

Trunks must pursue Hedo because Mai, who is upset that Hedo is getting away with it, says, “I mean, you’re Saiyaman X-1, right?” Mai is more shocked that Trunks truly believed he was keeping a good secret than she is that Trunks is surprised that Mai figured things out. In a previous battle with Trunks, Mai received a close-up view of Saiyaman X-1 and knew immediately that it was him. It wouldn’t have made much sense for Mai to have overlooked such a clear link given her track record of being smart and tough even at the age of a high school student.
In Dragon Ball mythology, Mai has always held a peculiar place. She has been a component of the series since its beginning when she was an agent of Emperor Pilaf’s and a member of the Pilaf Gang. The Future Trunks arc in Dragon Ball Super, however, offered us a glimpse of the future in which Mai is still very much a brave fighter and has a close romantic bond with Trunks. Trunks and Mai are now at an age and a more peaceful point in the Dragon Ball timeline where romance can occur. When they were all still young children, their relationship was cutesy.
