How to get started with Dota 2

Dota 2 is a free-to-play game, so you can try it out without any strings attached. To get started, all you need is a PC. Dota 2 is completely free to play, with no restrictions on gameplay. The game does have many different skins and other cosmetic items, but you can play everything the game has to offer right away. Every single hero in the game can be played freely without the need to grind the game or invest money to unlock them.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL DOTA 2

Valve, the parent company of Steam, is the developer behind Dota 2. As a result, in order to play Dota 2, you must have a Steam account and the Steam client installed. After you’ve registered and downloaded the client, go to the store tab and search for “Dota 2” to access the store page.

After successfully installing Dota 2 on your machine, navigate to the “Library”-Tab of your Steam client. There, you select Dota 2 before pressing the “Play” button to begin the game.

HOW TO START PLAYING DOTA 2

When the game has finished launching, you will be taken to the main menu. While you can start playing right away by pressing the “Play Dota” button in the lower right, it is highly recommended that you first go through the tutorial before jumping into a multiplayer game.

To begin the tutorial, go to the “Learn”-Tab in the client. Click on the sub-header “Tutorials” within that category. Here you will find an introduction to the mechanics of Dota 2 as well as a few short missions to help you get started.

As is often the case in complex games such as Dota 2 or other MOBAs, tutorials only cover the most basic fundamentals, and it is strongly advised that you either play versus bots first or continue learning through additional material before diving into your first match.

WHERE TO LEARN THE BASICS

If you are a complete beginner and want to learn more about Dota 2, there are several notable guides available on the internet that can assist you. Kevin “Purge” Godec is one of the most well-known guide creators, with an entire series aimed at new players that explains the game in detail.

The internet is full of guides, and if you follow them religiously, you will undoubtedly improve your game. While the supplemental material is important, playing the game on a regular basis is just as important when you first start out, and we recommend that you gather four other friends to play with you as they can also help you on your long journey to becoming a better player.
