An exclusive public school’s children have been going missing for some time, and in the first episode of Black Butler: Public School Arc, the queen’s 12-year-old watchdog and his demon butler set out to find out why.
The public schools in Black Butler’s Victorian England are separate entities, shielded from any interference from the government, therefore the queen cannot take an active role in the inquiry. Queen Elizabeth II has a special interest in Derrick, son of Duke Clemens, who is also her cousin. As a result, our cunning investigator Ciel goes to Weston College, a prestigious boys’ boarding school on the Thames River bank, for the first time, and…walks on the forbidden grass.
Everybody knows that regular pupils can’t cross the grass because of the school’s strict hierarchical system. This power is reserved for prefects. After we meet the four school prefects—Edgar Redmond of Scarlet Fox House for students of outstandingly noble birth, Lawrence Bluewer of Sapphire Owl House for students who excel in academics.
Herman Greenhil of Green Lion House for students who excel in martial arts and athletics, and Gregory Violet of Violet Wolf House for artistically gifted students—a fellow student, McMillan, explains this to Ciel. Students earn a “Y” for each rule they disobey; for every “Y,” they must complete 100 Latin hexameters.
