West Ham defeated Wolves 1-0 in the Premier League fixture at the London Stadium on Sunday. Tomas Soucek’s 59th minute goal was enough for David Moyes’ side to secure all three points and move themselves with just two points of top four. It was West Ham’s second win in the last six games and they are now placed at fifth spot in the league standings with 45 points from 27 games, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference. Meanwhile the defeat left Wolves at eighth spot with 40 points from 26 games.

The Hammers came into the match on the back of a goalless draw against relegation-threatened Watford last week and desperately needed a win to keep themselves within touching distance of the Champions League spot. Meanwhile Wolves boss Bruno Lage decided to make five changes after Thursday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal with Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence and Joao Moutinho dropping to the bench.

West Ham started the match on the driving seat as Aaron Cresswell saw his free-kick go just wide of goal before Michail Antonio was denied by Jose Sa from inside the box. Declan Rice, who led the home side, hit the post with a right-foot curler from 25-yards out.

At the other end, Hwang Hee-Chan’s effort went just wide before Francisco Trincao’s shot from inside the box went over the bar. Wolves lacked quality in front of goal because of the absence of  a number of first-choice attackers and managed to register only a single shot on target.

Soucek’s winner

West Ham’s persistence finally paid off when Soucek scored from close range after the cut-back from Antonio. In response at the other end, Fabio Silva’s near-post flick from Fernando Marcal’s cut-back missed the target.

The Hammers could have doubled the lead on 69 minutes when Pablo Fornals pass picked up an unmarked Jarrod Bowen inside the box, but the keeper made a decent save to deny the Englishman.

The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, bringing Pedro Neto, Jimenez and Podence off the bench, but West Ham defended pretty well to secure all three points.
