Two of the in-form teams in the Premier League will lock horns on Saturday lunchtime, as Newcastle United will host Liverpool at St James’ Park. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of some impressive victories as the Magpies thrashed Norwich City 3-0 last time out, while Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final tie on Tuesday. It’s going to be a pulsating match as both sides are in superb form having won each of their last four matches and are aiming to make it five in a row. After battling relegation in the initial stage of the competition, Eddie Howe’s side are now hoping to secure a European berth. Meanwhile the Reds are looking to leapfrog league leaders Manchester City.

Newcastle aiming for European spot

Newcastle thrashed Norwich courtesy of goals from Brazilian’s Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. Joelinton netted a first-half brace before Guimaraes scored early in the second half to seal the three points. A four-game winning streak is the perfect preparation for a clash against the mighty Liverpool, who are aiming for a quadruple of titles this campaign. The dominant victory at Carrow Road helped Howe’s side to move into ninth spot with 43 points from 33 games, just nine points away from the European spot. With five more matchdays remaining, securing a European qualification is very much a realistic target. In the four-match winning streak, the Magpies have conceded just one goal.

Liverpool is a dominant force

On the other hand, The Reds got the better of Villarreal in the mid-week courtesy of Jordan Henderson’s deflected effort and Sadio Mane’s poke in from Mohamed Salah’s assist. Klopp’s side produced a very dominant performance against the Europa League champions, who had overcome the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich in the previous rounds to make the final-four. Meanwhile a 2-0 win at Everton kept the gap at the top to Man City to just one point, meaning that the Reds have a chance to rise to the summit for time being, before the leaders meet Leeds United a few hours later. Left-back Andy Robertson broke the deadlock after the hour-mark at Goodison Park before Divock Origi doubled the lead and sealed the victory.

Probable Lineups

Newcastle don’t have any new injury issues apart from the long-term absentees Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden, while Ryan Fraser is trying hard to return before the end of the season. Joelinton came off with a knock against Norwich but is not thought to be nursing anything serious and striker Chris Wood could return to lead the attack.

Meanwhile Klopp has an almost full-strength squad at his disposal with Roberto Firmino’s foot problem the only injury issue. Kostas Tsimikas who missed the mid-week fixture because of illness could return and challenge Robertson. The German coach is likely to rotate his side because of the hectic schedule.

Newcastle United possible starting lineup: Dubravka, Krafth, Schar, Burn, Targett, Shelvey, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Almiron, Wood, Saint-Maximin

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Alisson, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Tsimikas, Henderson, Fabinho, Keita, Salah, Mane, Jota
