Aaron Cresswell and Jarrod Bowen were on target as West Ham United beat Everton 2-1 in the Premier League fixture at London Stadium on Sunday. Cresswell had given the home side the lead just after the half-hour mark courtesy of a brilliant free-kick goal before Mason Holgate equalised for Everton eight minutes after the break. And then, Bowen struck on his return from injury to ensure the Hammers moved back to the fifth spot in the league standings.

Everton suffered a blow before kick-off as midfielder Donny van de Beek was injured in the warm-up and Holgate came in to the starting eleven. The visitors started the match brightly, had the majority of the ball possession in the initial phase and almost took the lead mid-way through the first half.

Richarlison rounded off West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski, but took too much time to pull the trigger, allowing Ryan Fredricks to make the clearance. The Hammers made the most of the escape as they broke the deadlock on 32 minutes. Cresswell curled a brilliant free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Moments later, at the other end, a poor touch from Fredericks gave Richarlison a clear sight of goal, but the Brazilian once again wasted the opportunity. Frank Lampard’s side were creating chances but were wasteful in front of goal as Calvert-Lewin clipped the crossbar with just Fabianski to beat early in the second half.

However, the visitors finally leveled the score on 53 minutes when West Ham failed to clear a corner and Holgate’s strike deflected off Fornals’ outstretched boot before going past Fabianski into the net.

West Ham were quick to respond and restored the lead six minutes later as Alex Iwobi lost the ball possession, allowing Michail Antonio to drive forward into the Everton area. The Englishman’s shot was saved by Pickford but the rebound fell to Bowen who finished off with a clever chip over a sliding Jonjoe Kenny’s block.

The result means Lampard’s side remained at the 17th spot, just three points above relegation zone, but have played two games less than 18th placed Watford. Meanwhile David Moyes’ side are just three points adrift of the top four, but have played three games more than fourth-placed Arsenal.
