World mourns the death of cyclist Gino Mader who died due to crash

Gino Mader, a Swiss road and track cyclist, faced an unfortunate death on June 16, 2023, after running into a critical accident during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. His team, Bahrain Victorious which is a UCL WorldTeam cycling team, made the announcement that he was unable to recover from the intense injuries he suffered and succumbed to death. 

After a high-speed crash that took place on the last downhill stretch of the stage on Thursday, the 26-year-old Gino Mader received immediate medical attention, including CPR, at the site before being transported in a helicopter to the hospital. Despite the efforts of the medical team at Chur hospital, Gino passed away at 11:30 am (local time), as per the announcement by Bahrain Victorious.

During the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse, a critical accident unfolded as the race progressed down the slopes of Albula Pass. On the route to La Punt, Mäder’s bike collided with that of Magnus Sheffield, an American cyclist who represents UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers, while they were travelling at an intense speed. The mishap took place after they had covered roughly 200 kilometers of the race. Mäder took a tumble into a ravine and was later found devoid of movement and submerged in water.

The Principal and Managing Director of Team Bahrain Victorious, Milan Erzen, expressed his sorrow and stated, “We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mäder. His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all. Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Bahrain Victorious will race in his honour, keeping his memory on every road we race. We are determined to show the spirit and passion Gino displayed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.”

How did the Tour de Suisse racers and organizers pay a tribute to Gino?

The organizers of the Tour de Suisse declared that the sixth stage of the race would be conducted in a non-competitive manner to honor the memory of Gino Mäder. This decision was made after discussions between the race management and Mäder’s family. Bahrain Victorious led the pack of riders up a small ascent, met with quiet yet earnest applause from the crowd of spectators lining the route. 

The only audible noise as the finish line was crossed was the soft clapping for the Bahrain Victorious cyclists, followed by the rest of the riders. Several Bahrain cyclists responded to the wave of empathy from spectators by raising their hands in acknowledgment. Pello Bilbao, in memory of his teammate and friend, gestured towards the sky. The peloton, in unity, covered the last 20km of the Friday’s stage towards Oberwil-Lieli, paying tribute to Mäder.
