American sprinter Tori Bowie, who won three medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics, including a gold in the women’s 4×100 m relay event, has died on May 2, 2023. The news was made public by the athlete’s agency that was responsible for managing the athlete, Icon Management Inc. The agency tweeted, “We’re devastated to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away. We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends.”

The American athlete Tori Bowie who became the world champion in the women’s 100m in the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, bid-adieu to the world at the age of 32. In addition, she played an instrumental role in helping the USA team win the women’s 4×100 m relay race in the same edition. Tori Bowie also clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 100m in the World Athletics Championships in 2015 in Beijing.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported that Tori Bowie was discovered dead in her residence in Orlando, Florida after a wellness check was requested. They stated that no foul play is suspected. The officers arrived at Tori Bowie’s home on Tuesday afternoon to perform a well-being check on the woman who had been out of touch for multiple days. Although no signs of foul play were observed, the department mentioned that further details regarding Bowie’s death would need to come from the medical examiner’s office. However, it is speculated that the cause of death might be suicide due to mental illness or a stroke.

Tori Bowie was born in Sand Hill, Rankin County, Mississippi. She went to the Pisgah High School for education, where she began her track and field career. Raised by her grandmother in the small town of Sand Hill, her exceptional talent took her to the international stage. During her high school years, Bowie won multiple Mississippi state championships in the 100 m, 200 m, and long jump. She later earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi, pursuing an interdisciplinary degree in psychology and social work. As a student, she became a two-time NCAA Division I long jump champion in 2011, both indoors and outdoors. Bowie shifted her focus to sprints after her international debut at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2014.
