Slovenian sensation Primoz Roglic is expanding his reach in the cycling world

The 31-year-old is fast making a name for himself in the cycling world after switching to the sport at a very late age.

Cycling was not Primoz Roglic‘s first priority. The Slovenian started as a ski-jumper before leaving it for cycling at a relatively later stage. The Jumbo-Visma’s Roglic is the current World No.1 ranked road cyclist in the UCI World Ranking. Even though he started his cycling career at a later stage, he’s fast making inroads grabbing major honours in the sport. In the best form of his life, Roglic will be eager to continue his dream run.

Having started to compete as a ski jumper in 2003, he became the Junior World Team event champion in 2007. Roglic ended his ski jumping career in 2012 summer. He then started cycling in the same year and joined the continental Adria Mobil team for the 2013 season. After three positive seasons with the team, he got a contract to ride with LottoNL–Jumbo.

Rise to fame

In 2016, Roglic instantly showcased his ability in his first year at the World Tour level, finishing 2nd on Stage 7 at the Volta a Catalunya. He further won the Slovenian National Time Trial Championships before finishing 10th in the Time trial at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The 2017 season was a memorable one for Roglic as he began the campaign by clinching the overall title at the Volta ao Algarve. The big one came later. After being named in the startlist for the Tour de France, he incredibly won Stage 17 of the race, thereby becoming the first Slovenian to win a stage of the Tour de France.

Primoz Roglic also won the Stage 19 of the 2018 Tour de France and eventually finished the 2018 Tour in respectful fourth overall. He further bagged the 2019 edition of Tirreno–Adriatico and the Tour de Romandie, before securing wins in Italian races – the Giro dell’Emilia and Tre Valli Varesine. The highlight of his 2019 season was the Vuelta a Espana win. He thus became the first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour competition.

In the pandemic disrupted 2020 season, Primoz won the stage four of Tour de France before finishing second in the final results. He also defended his Vuelta a Espana title. At 31 years, Primoz Roglic is at the prime of his cycling career and will be eager to continue on this incredible journey in bringing more accolades to his country.
