Lungi Ngidi is a professional cricketer, who plays for South Africa national cricket team. Lungi Ngidi plays for the Northerns in domestic cricket. In South Africa’s annual awards ceremony of 2020 season, Ngidi was named as player of the year for both the formats One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. Lungi Ngidi was born on 29 March 1996 in Durban, Kwazulu Natal region of South Africa. He is one of the tallest players in the team with height 6 feet and 4 inches. He is a right arm medium fast bowler, who specializes in taking wickets. Ngidi attended Highbury Preparatory School with the help of a scholarship he got in Kloof, Durban.

Ngidi got a scholarship to attend Hilton College School. Initially, he used to play rugby and represent Hilton at rugby. Eventually he started focusing on cricket, which later became his professional career. He was trained by Neil Johnson, a former Zimbabwe all rounder at Hilton school. Ngidi was first selected for the South Africa T20 cup in the Northerns cricket team in 2015. He was awarded the title of player of the cup for 2016 South Africa T20 cup. For the inaugural season of Global T20 League, Ngidi was signed by Benoni Zalmi in August 2017. Nevertheless, the tournament was postponed by the South Africa cricket board, which later got canceled.

For the 2018 season of Indian Premier League (IPL), Ngidi was signed by Chennai Super Kings in January 2018. In the inaugural season of Mzansi Super League, Ngidi was acquired by Tshwane Spartans in October 2018. Prior to the 2021-22 cricketing season in South Africa, Ngidi was selected by the Northerns. Currently, he is playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL, as they bought him in the mega auction of 2022. For the first time in January 2017, Ngidi was selected in South Africa’s team for the T20 International series against Sri Lanka. He played his T20 debut match for SA against Sri Lanka on 20 January 2017. He was named as man of the match for his outstanding performance.

Ngidi was selected for the One Day International series, but was later removed due to injury. Ngidi played his Test debut against India on 13 January 2018. He took 7 wickets in his first match against India. Later, he became part of the ODI team. On 7 February 2018, he played his ODI debut match for SA against India. He was given his central contract by the cricket board in March 2018. Against Australia in March 2020, he took his first 5-fer in an ODI. He became the fastest South African bowler to complete 50 wickets in ODI. Against England in July 2022, he took his first 5-fer in T20I. He became part of the social movement called ‘Black Lives Matter’ in 2020 and actively participated in that. He is a promising fast bowler with promising stats in all the formats.
