The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is set to kick off on March 22, and despite coinciding with general elections, the entire season will unfold in India, as confirmed by Chairman Arun Dhumal in a statement to PTI on Tuesday. The release of the full schedule for the 17th edition of the IPL has been delayed due to the anticipated general elections in April and May. Arun Dhumal indicated that initially, only the schedule for the first 15 days will be disclosed, with the subsequent games’ lineup to be determined after the announcement of election dates next month.

“We are targeting a March 22 start for the tournament. Working closely with government agencies, we will initially unveil the schedule, and the entire tournament will be conducted in India,” affirmed Dhumal. While the 2009 IPL edition was entirely held overseas (South Africa) and the 2014 season partly in the UAE due to general elections, the 2019 tournament took place in India despite concurrent elections.

With the T20 World Cup beginning shortly after the IPL concludes, the final is anticipated to take place on May 26. India’s opening World Cup fixture against Ireland is slated for June 5 in New York, with the ICC tournament commencing with a clash between the USA and Canada on June 1.

In keeping with tradition, the IPL opener will showcase the winners of the previous year, the Chennai Super Kings, facing off against the runners-up, Gujarat Titans. The players’ auction for the 2024 season, held in December, saw Australian pacer Mitchell Starc become the most expensive player in IPL history, securing a deal with the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.

The excitement of the IPL starting has begun, and the countdown is on with just over a month left for the first ball to be bowled.
