Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of reaching a special milestone when Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2021 clash in New Delhi. Currently, Rohit is level with Gautam Gambhir on 71 wins as captain in the Indian Premier League. A win against Chennai Super Kings will take him to 72 wins. This will put him second in the all-time list of captains with most wins in the IPL. MS Dhoni is way ahead of the pack with 115 wins in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni is the only skipper with over 100 wins as a captain in the IPL.

Mumbai Indians have held the edge over Chennai Super Kings in the last eight years of the Indian Premier League. In the last 12 encounters, Mumbai Indians have won nine and lost just three matches. In fact, Mumbai Indians have won three out of their five titles by beating the Chennai Super Kings in the final.

Total dominance by Rohit Sharma

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians have completely turned the head-to-head advantage and number of titles around. Before 2013, Chennai Super Kings had the most number of titles with two. Until 2018, both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians were level with three titles.

However, in IPL 2019 and 2020, Mumbai Indians have pulled ahead when it comes to titles. In 2019, Mumbai Indians won all four encounters in that edition. Rohit’s team overcame a spirited knock from Shane Watson to win by one run in the final. In IPL 2020, Mumbai Indians inflicted a 10-wicket thrashing of the Chennai Super Kings.

Overall, Mumbai Indians have a 18-12 head-to-head advantage. Rohit will be hoping to continue the good run against the three-time IPL champions. Currently, Chennai Super Kings are at the top of the table. Mumbai Indians are in the fourth spot.

Dhoni’s team won their previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by a big margin. On the other hand, Rohit’s team won their clash against Rajasthan Royals. A win for either side could give more clarity as to which are the top four sides that might make the IPL 2021 playoffs.
