Rohit Sharma surpasses MS Dhoni to become Indian with most sixes in IPL

Rohit Sharma is now the leading Indian six-hitter in IPL history, overtaking MS Dhoni's tally of 216 sixes.

Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday, became the Indian cricketer to have smashed the most number of sixes in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit achieved this milestone during his franchise’s IPL 2021 league encounter against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). The 33-year-old smashed two sixes during his innings of 32 runs off 25 deliveries, which further comprised of two boundaries. Rohit’s second six saw his tally of sixes in the cash-rich league reach 217, surpassing the 216 sixes smashed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni.

The 33-year-old smashed his second six off a short delivery by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, directing the ball to deep mid-wicket. Rohit was quick to pick the length of the ball, standing inside the line over hitting it flat and hard over mid-wicket.

His first six of the night was against Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Mujeeb bowled a short and quick delivery to Rohit, who rocked back and smashed the ball into the deep mid-wicket stands.

The 33-year-old now occupies the third spot on the list of batsmen to have hit the most sixes in the cash-rich league. Windies superstar Chris Gayle who currently represents Punjab Kings (PBKS) leads the list. Gayle has smashed 351 sixes in 134 matches.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman AB de Villiers is placed on the second spot, having hit 237 sixes. Dhoni and RCB skipper Virat Kohli round off the top-five list, with 216 and 201 sixes respectively.

Rohit further completed 4,000 runs as a captain in the T20 format during the course of the innings. MI have won and lost a game apiece, having played two games so far in their IPL 2021 league campaign.
