Rishabh Pant is unlikely to play any cricket for the majority of 2023, and he will miss a number of major competitions, including the IPL. According to the medical report sent to the BCCI on Pant, who survived a car accident on December 30, the wicket-keeper batsman has injured all three important ligaments in his knee, two of which were just mended, and surgery on the third is expected in six weeks. As a result, Pant is likely to be sidelined for at least six months, which could jeopardise his chances of being selected for the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India in October-November.

Pant had knee surgery last week after his right ligaments were torn in an accident while travelling from Delhi to meet his family in Roorkee. Pant, one of India’s top contracted players, was airlifted from Dehradun last week at the request of the BCCI and flown to Mumbai to be under the observation of Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, one of the board’s specialised doctors. Since the accident and surgery, the BCCI has published three medical bulletins, one of which said that Pant had also hurt his right ankle. Pant’s anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, and medial collateral ligament – all of which are required for mobility and stability – have all been torn, according to ESPNcricinfo.

No certain date for his return

The doctors have not yet provided a precise date for Pant’s return to training, but both the BCCI and the selectors have concluded that the wicketkeeper-batter will be away for at least six months. Pant was rested for the home series against Sri Lanka after appearing in the away series in Bangladesh in December. On Monday, he was not named to the squads for the New Zealand series, which will be followed by the first two Tests of the BGT against Australia. Pant DC’s captain will also be absent from the IPL, which begins on April 1. Pant will also be absent from the World Test Championship final in June if India advances to the top game.
