Mohammad Bobat to lead RCB as Director of Cricket in IPL 2024

Mohammad Bobat, currently England Men’s performance director, is set to assume the role of director of cricket at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, marking his departure from the ECB in February next year. Bobat, aged 40, has played a pivotal role in England Men’s cricket, overseeing player development and contributing to their success in World Cups across various formats. His tenure at the ECB, which began in 2011, involved managing the England Men’s Under-19s program and serving as the ECB’s first Player Identification Lead in 2016.

Having previously collaborated with RCB in a consulting capacity, Bobat shares a longstanding professional relationship with Andy Flower, RCB’s newly appointed head coach, stemming from their joint work at the ECB. This partnership is set to continue in the IPL ahead of the 2024 season. Reflecting on his impending departure from the ECB, Bobat expressed gratitude for the opportunities and support he has received throughout his 12-year tenure. He acknowledged the achievements and cherished memories made during this time, emphasizing the strength of the international pathway and the quality of people involved.

Bobat’s appointment solidifies RCB’s overseas back-room staff, including Flower, Adam Griffith (bowling coach), Freddie Wilde (analyst), and Evan Speechly (physio). Prathmesh Mishra, RCB’s chairman, expressed anticipation about Bobat’s impact on the team’s playing style and hoped for enhanced performance in the upcoming IPL season. RCB, despite making multiple playoff appearances, is yet to secure its maiden IPL title.
