Jason Holder was tasked to defend 20 runs in the final over of the fifth Twenty20 International against England in Barbados. He did not begin well, bowling a no-ball which yielded an additional run. A brilliant wide yorker in the free-hit ushered in a chain of events that saw West Indies pull off a magnificent win. Jason Holder managed a stupendous double hat-trick, meaning four wickets in four balls as West Indies clinched the five-match T20I series against England 3-2 by winning the match by 17 runs.

Jason Holder thus joined Lasith Malinga and Rashid Khan in taking four wickets in four balls in a Twenty20 International. While Malinga achieved the feat in ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals, Rashid Khan achieved it in a Twenty20 International against Ireland. However, Jason Holder became the first West Indies player to take a hat-trick in Twenty20 Internationals. Here is the full list of players who have taken four wickets in four balls

Holder’s first wicket came in the form of a low full toss which Chris Jordan hit to deep midwicket. Sam Billings also hit a full toss straight to deep midwicket. Holder got the hat-trick when Adil Rashid slogged to deep square leg. The fourth wicket was an anti-climax as Jason Holder felt that the ball missed Saqib Mahmood’s stumps. But, the ball had clipped the bail, and Holder was confirmed with the double hat-trick.

West Indies start strongly against England

West Indies chose to bat and the openers started strongly. Brandon King got going with a six while Kyle Mayers hit a six and four off Saqib Mahmood. Mayers showed his intent with a six and four off Chris Jordan. King gave him good support with a six off Moeen Ali as the partnership crossed fifty. But, Adil Rashid broke the stand with the wicket of Mayers for 31. Liam Livingstone was greeted with a six by Romario Shepherd but the bowler had his revenge by dismissing him for 6.

Nicholas Pooran also got going with a six while Brandon King made good progress. But, just as he was looking good, Livingstone sent him back for 34. England tightened the screws when Nicholas Pooran was out for 21. At 105/4 in 15 overs, England seemed to have restricted West Indies.

But, Rovman Powell, who hit a century earlier, blasted Reece Topley for a six and a four as the 17th over yielded 18 runs. Powell blasted two more sixes off Jordan as West Indies staged a revival. Pollard hit a six off Topley as the fifty-run stand was up. Pollard and Powell both hit a six off Jordan as West Indies hit 74 runs in the final five overs to finish on 179/4.

England fight but stumble at the end

Jason Roy got going with two fours off Akeal Hosein but the bowler dismissed him immediately. Tom Banton went after Holder with a boundary while James Vince punished him with a six and four. Banton hit a four and six but Odean Smith sent him back for 16. Jason Holder dropped Moeen Ali on 0, with Vince powering Sheldon Cottrell for two fours.

Vince and Moeen Ali stitched a solid stand as England reached 86/2 in 10 overs, the same score that the West Indies had reached. But, after the resumption, Holder sent back Moeen Ali for 14. Akeal Hosein sent back Liam Livingstone as James Vince notched up his second T20I fifty. But, Hosein dealt England a killer blow when Vince was dismissed for 55. Hosein ended up with his fourth wicket as Phillip Salt was stumped.

Billings kept the game alive with two sixes as the 18th over yielded 20 runs. When Cottrell conceded just eight runs in the 19th over, Holder managed to wrap the game up in grand style with a double hat-trick. Holder ended the series with 15 wickets and he was named both the Man of the Match and Player of the Series.

Speaking about his achievement, Holder said, “I just wanted to stay in the game. Did not work well yesterday, but was totally the opposite tonight. I was a bit disappointed with the no-ball, I look to be disciplined, but then to get the next five balls perfectly was nice.”
