Delhi Capitals (DC) have announced their decision to include Shams Mulani as a short-term COVID-19 replacement for Axar Patel in their squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Axar had tested positive for COVID during his mandatory quarantine ahead of the season. He was taken to the BCCI’s medical facility for isolation and treatment. The Delhi-based franchise have also signed Anirudha Joshi as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. Iyer is ruled out of the ongoing edition of the cash-rich league, following an injury sustained during the recently concluded ODI series between India and England.

Joshi will be making an appearance for his third IPL team, having been a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the past. He represents Karnataka in domestic cricket. Joshi has featured in 17 List A and 22 T20 matches so far.

Mulani Available For A Limited Period

Mulani is a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler from Mumbai. He comes in as a replacement under IPL’s Player Regulations. Under the Regulation 6.1 (c), franchises are allowed to sign a short-term replacement player until the original squad member is permitted to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment.

Mulani will only be a part of the Delhi-based franchise until Axar recovers and is allowed to join the team again. However, the cricketer from Mumbai will not be allowed to represent another IPL franchise this season after leaving DC.

The Delhi-based franchise is currently being led by Rishabh Pant, in the absence of Iyer. Pant will be looking to lead DC on to a maiden league triumph in the cash-rich league, which has eluded them so far.
