On Day 2 of the Ashes Test at Old Trafford, England scored an impressive 384 runs in 72 overs, losing just four wickets in the process. The aggressive approach from the English batsmen left Australia trailing, despite their earlier batting effort. The day began with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc walking out to bat for Australia. However, their start was short-lived as James Anderson outfoxed Cummins on the very first ball of the day. Starc, on the other hand, contributed significantly to Australia’s first-innings total of 317.

England faced an early setback as Mitchell Starc dismissed Ben Duckett. However, Australia struggled to capitalize on the momentum, managing to take only three more wickets and conceding nearly 400 runs in the day. Zak Crawley emerged as the star performer for England, scoring a magnificent 189 runs off 182 balls. For a player who might not have been the first name on the team sheet, this achievement was nothing short of remarkable. Crawley’s century, his first in an Ashes Test, came at a crucial juncture for England. He displayed aggressive intent and received valuable support from Moeen Ali (54) and Joe Root (84) during his innings.

Moeen Ali showcased sheer elegance at the crease, while Joe Root displayed attacking strokes with grace. The former captain partnered with Crawley to build a formidable 206-run stand for the third wicket. The partnership was broken by Cameron Green, and Josh Hazlewood soon followed up by dismissing Joe Root. Ben Stokes and Harry Brook then successfully defied the Australian attack in the final half-an-hour, allowing England to finish the day at 384-4. With a lead of 67 runs and potential weather disruptions on the horizon for Day 4, England will aim to build on their advantage and post a significant total of around 150-200 runs.

Overall, Day 2 was dominated by England, with 402 runs scored in 79.4 overs and six wickets falling. The pitch provided an intriguing contest, witnessing periods of assistance for the bowlers and becoming a batting paradise at other times. The injury to Mitchell Starc remains a concern for Australia, and his availability to bowl on the following day will be closely monitored.
