As the cricketing world gears up for the T20 World Cup 2024, later this year, Bangladesh is all set to host Sri Lanka in what promises to be a thrilling three-match ODI series. The first ODI of Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh is scheduled to take place on March 13 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. With both teams, looking to warm-up to the global tournament, it promises to be an enthralling contest between the two Asian cricketing giants. Bangladesh, who will be captained by; Najmul Hossain Shanto, will enter the series, without the services of their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who will be missing from the entirety, of the series.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be missing their skipper Wanindu Hasaranga in the first two matches due to his suspension. In his absence, Charith Asalnka would take the charge while Hasaranga would resumer after the second match. They have also made a vital change in their side as they included wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella for the first time in since 2021, replacing injured Kusal Janith Pereira. As the action shifts to the 50-over format and both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will hope to build on their performances in the T20Is and fine-tune their skills ahead of the longer format. The ODI series also presents an opportunity for both teams’ peripheral players to make a statement and keep themselves in the reckoning for the T20 World Cup and with that in mind, the stakes are high for both teams.
The pitch at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium is expected to be a belter for the batsmen period, especially in the first half of the game. There may be some assistance for spin bowlers throughout, however, the fast bowlers will get their chances too. Expect some early swing and seam movement and then under lights, it should be pretty similar. On Wednesday, the temperature in Chattogram is forecasted to fluctuate between 23 and 32 degrees Celsius, with humidity persisting throughout the day.
In recent times, Bangladesh has become a stronger opponent against the Lankans and overall, Sri Lanka have a dominating record against the Tigers, having won 42 out of the 54 matches played between the two sides, with the Bangladeshis winning only 10 and 2 matches ending without a result.
