On Wednesday, the BCCI disclosed its annual player retained for the 2023/24 season, and notable omissions from the central contracts were Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. In an official statement, the board clarified, “Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations. The BCCI has advised all athletes to prioritize participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team.” The duo has been absent from the Indian team, reportedly due to their decision not to partake in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who was awarded a Grade B contract last season, was also excluded from the current list, having not played a Test match since the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. Newcomers Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and Yashasvi Jaiswal secured their inaugural contracts, while Shubman Gill was elevated from Grade B to Grade A. The premier category, A+, continued to feature Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah.
