German record champions Bayern Munich salvaged a 1-1 draw in their first leg Round of 16 fixture of the Champions League against RB Salzburg on Wednesday. Kingsley Coman (90′) continued to increase his stakes at the club with an equalizer to restore parity in the dying minutes after Chukwubuike Adamu (21′) opened the scoring for the home team in the first-half. It comes after their 4-2 loss against VLF Bochum in the Bundesliga and seemingly looks like the Julian Nagelsmann-managed side have some ground to make up.

However, the Bayern Munich head coach, feels that it was a pleasing performance with a lot of positives to take out after their humiliating loss against Bochum in their previous fixture. But the match also highlighted that they have plenty to work on ahead of their next Bundesliga fixture against Furth on Sunday.

“Yes, then again in the second half. The first one wasn’t like Bochum, but it was also very error-prone. The goal that was conceded was actually relatively easy to defend. It was a balancing act in the second half because we defended offensively,” Bayern Munich head coach said after the match.

Bayern Munich head coach mighty impressed with Kingsley Coman

Nagelsmann applauded Coman for his match-winning effort. The French winger had recently extended his contract till 2027 with the club. He has been involved in at least one goal in each of his last four Champions League appearances (two goals, two assists).

“He was really good there (goal sequence)! He can even cross to Lewy once, so we still have a great chance. Great performance from him,” he lauded.

We wanted to win here, but at least we didn’t lose. Back home, with our fans behind us, we have every chance and even more self-belief,” said the winger, whose goal preserved Bayern’s unbeaten UCL away run (now 22 games on the trot; a record).

The German giants, however, need to better one of their worst runs in the past 10 months. Otherwise their dominance in the European football will continue to be questioned.

Their next opponents sit at the bottom of the table, fighting a relegation battle, after returning to the German top flight league. They will have a point to prove against the league leaders.
Bayern Munich also have other issues to address as their goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer will be out until mid-March following knee surgery. Leon Goretzka is also out with a knee injury while Alphonso Davies remains sidelined as he awaits further tests after being diagnosed with myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle.

Bayern Munich currently sit at the top of the Bundesliga table with 52 points, six points clear of their traditional rivals Borussia Dortmund
