Rangers legend Ronald de Boer believes his former club can shock the Europa League by knocking out Borussia Dortmund. The Scottish Premier League champions travel to Germany for the first leg of their knockout tie against the Bundesliga giants, before hosting them for the second leg a week later. Rangers have been boosted by the news that Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland is an injury doubt for the last 16 of Europe’s secondary club competition.

However, with Marco Rose’s squad including Gio Reyna, Jude Bellingham, and Marco Reus, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players face a daunting task. De Boer, on the other hand, believes that the Ibrox club has a realistic chance of defeating Dortmund over two legs, but warns that the Germans have been finding their feet after a slow start to the season.

‘Chance of causing an upset’

“I think Rangers will have a chance of causing an upset,” De Boer told the Scottish Sun. “Of course Dortmund will be favourites as, behind Bayern Munich, they are the top team in Germany. They didn’t have a great start to the season, but they have steadily improved.”

“They also have a Dutch player, Donyell Malen, who I have seen play a lot and he has continued to get better and better. It is a team with a lot of great players, but Rangers will still have a chance to go through. I think it will be a very tight fixture and I’m looking forward to it,” he added.
