Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann is optimistic about his left-back Alphonso Davies’ recovery from mild myocarditis, an inflammatory heart condition, after being tested positive for coronavirus. The condition has kept the Canadian away from the Bayern Munich set-up for the last four months now but the head coach assured that he is well on track to recovery. The 21-year-old last featured in a competitive game on December 17, 2021. And although it is still going to take some time to return to full fitness, the head coach assured that the signs of danger are gone.

“Fortunately, he’s on the mend,” Nagelsmann revealed following Bayern’s 4-2 loss to Bochum on Bundesliga Matchday 22. “It’s still going to take a while, but the danger signs around his heart condition are certainly gone. He has another appointment in two weeks. The best-case scenario seems to have happened in terms of the healing process.”

The left-back was one of the first players from the Bayern Munich squad to be tested positive with coronavirus during the winter-break. He had returned to training in January but further tests revealed that he was suffering from signs of inflammation of the heart muscle.

Myocarditis – in most cases a mild, temporary condition – was detected in the follow-up examination that all players undergo following a positive Covid test.

BAYERN MUNICH MISS DAVIES

Nagelsmann said that there is no fixed date of return for the left back but the club will provide support and time to him in the process.

“Phonzy’s fine, boredom aside,” the Bayern boss explained. “Once the four-week period has passed, then we’ll do further tests. We’ll see what the medical imaging reveals then.”

Davies made a name for himself through his consistent performances after joining Bayern Munich from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019. He was a regular for the side in the first two years and impressed in Bayern Munich’s sextuple-winning campaign. He has been regarded as one of the best left-back’s of the game currently.

Davies had made 23 competitive appearances for Nagelsmann’s Bayern, earning the Bundesliga’s Player of the Month award for his efforts in November.
