Bayern Munich stated on Wednesday that Alphonso Davies, a Canadian international, had tested positive for Covid, two days before their first Bundesliga encounter of 2022. Bayern Munich are scheduled to host Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday, but the visitors’ sporting director Max Eberl has announced that the match will be rescheduled.

“He (Davies) is doing well and is in house quarantine,” Bayern said in a statement.

“It is the case that Bayern would like to postpone the game, but that’s for the league to decide,” Eberl said Wednesday after speaking on the phone with Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and the German Football League (DFL).

Davies, like captain Manuel Neuer, is the latest member of Bayern’s squad to test positive. On Tuesday, winger Leroy Sane and defender Dayot Upamecano were added to the increasing list. Bayern Munich are already without Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr, who are representing Cameroon and Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, respectively. Josip Stanisic is out with an injury, and Leon Goretzka and Niklas Sule, both of Germany, were absent from training on Wednesday.

If a side has 15 or more players available, the DFL can refuse a request to postpone a Bundesliga match. Gladbach, on the other hand, is preparing for the Bundesliga encounter as though it will take place, according to coach Adi Huetter. When the two teams met in the German Cup last October, Gladbach hammered Bayern 5-0. Bayern Munich is on track to win the Bundesliga for the tenth time in a row, with a nine-point advantage heading into the second half of the season. Gladbach sit in 14th place, barely two points above the relegation zone.

Depleted Bundesliga to return Friday

A depleted Bundesliga action will resume on Friday with league leaders Bayern Munich hosting traditional rivals Borussia Monchengladbach. The other fixtures on the day will see RB Leipzig playing against FSV Mainz 05, Bayern Leverkusen against Union Berlin, Hoffenheim vs Augsburg, SC Freiburg host Arminia, Furth against Vfb Sttutgart and Eintracht Frankfurt take on Borussia Dortmund. However, the major concerns for the German clubs remains that of handling their unit in absence of the players, who have contracted Covid-19 or out owing to injury. It will also be a test of their bench strength and academy players in the depleted conditions.

Joe Scally, Mamadou Doucouré, Denis Zakaria and Keanan Bennetts were in quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19 this week. They are expected to miss out for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the upcoming fixture.

Record champions Bayern Munich had informed their nine players along with assistant coach Dino Toppmöller were quarantined after testing positive for Covid-19. Their captain and veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and defender Lucas Hernandez contracted the dreaded virus on their vacation in the Maldives, Kingsley Coman while he was in Dubai, and Corentin Tolisso while he was home in France. Alphonso Davies, Leroy Sané, Dayot Upamecano, Omar Richards and Tanguy Nianzou are the other players who are infected, as per reports.
