Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, popularly called as the Brothers of Destruction, have established themselves as two of the strongest competitors in Indian Badminton. Due to their consistency, they are now the World no. 5 at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings. They have brought laurels to the nation on numerous occasions including winning medals at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Indian Open, Swiss Open, Thailand Open, Thomas Cup, French Open, and more. We will now take a look at some of the biggest achievements of the Indian pair.

5) Thailand Open 2019 Super 500 title

At the Huamark indoor badminton stadium, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty achieved a historic feat by winning a Super 500 title, defeating world champions Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen 21-19, 18-21, 21-18. Rankireddy and Shetty, considered underdogs, became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to claim such a title. Despite being unseeded, they triumphed over the world’s second-ranked duo.

4) French Open 2022 Super 750 title

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched the French Open Super 750 title, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in straight games. The world number eight duo, who were runners-up in 2019, overpowered the 25th ranked pair 21-13, 21-19 in a 48-minute final. This victory marks the first time an Indian pair has triumphed in a Super 750 tournament.

3) India’s Thomas Cup Triumph

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty started off their 2022 season with an India Open Super 500 victory. However, they played an instrumental role in India’s Thomas Cup 2022 triumph as they contributed to India’s victory by defeating Olympic gold medalists Kevin Sanjaya and Muhammad Ahsan of Indonesia. Their win secured a 2-0 lead in India’s 3-0 sweep. Owing to their win, India scripted history by winning the gold medal and the first-ever medal in 43 years.

2) Bronze medal at the BWF World Championships

At the 2022 BWF World Championships, the men’s doubles duo Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy secured a bronze medal after losing to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semi-finals in Tokyo. This marked India’s first men’s doubles medal and 13th overall at the world championships. Previously, the Indian pair had defeated reigning world champions Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in the quarter-finals.

1) Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s biggest achievement was the gold-medal triumph at the Commonwealth Games 2022. They beat Ben Lane and Sean Vendy of England 21-15, 21-13 to win the gold in the final of the men’s doubles at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham on Monday. The pair sealed India’s first-ever gold in the men’s doubles event. They had earlier contributed to India’s silver-medal win in the mixed team event. This was their fourth medal at the multi-sport event, having won the gold in team event and silver in men’s doubles in the 2018 edition.
