Chirag Shetty, also known as Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty, is a badminton player who represents India in men’s doubles. He and his partner, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, are the World no.6 pair according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings. Popularly known as the Brothers of Destruction, the duo are the most successful Indian men’s doubles pair in badminton. Their highest ranking ever achieved is 5 ranking and they are the first doubles pair to be ranked inside the top 10.
Chirag Shetty was born on July 4, 1997, in Mumbai. The Indian shuttler started playing badminton at just the age of seven during his leisure period. However, with time, his interest grew and he started getting more attracted towards the sport. Professionally, he began practicing under the guidance of Manish Hadkar at the Goregaon Sports club. Chirag chose to pursue the sport on professional grounds when he was 16-year-old.
Chirag began accomplishing success at various levels- national and state. He later moved to Hyderabad city to train at the Pullela Gopichand Academy under Pullela Gopichand himself. There, he was paired up with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and the rest is history. The duo then went on to achieve glory for India at various international tournaments under the guidance of Malaysian coach Mathias Boe, who himself was a former world number one in doubles events.
Some of the major accomplishments of the brothers of destruction include multiple medals at Commonwealth Games, including their first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as a pair. In 2022, they also became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to win a bronze medal at the World Championships 2022. Earlier, in the year 2022, Chirag and Satwik played a crucial role in India’s historical triumph at the Thomas Cup 2022. The duo have also started their 2023 exceptionally after winning the Swiss Open 2023 title by defeating China’s Ren Xiangyu and Tan Qiang by 21-19, 24-22.
