PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen are set to lead India’s participation at the Swiss Open 2024, a prestigious badminton event. The tournament, part of the BWF Super 300 series, is kicking off at Basel, Switzerland’s St Jakobshalle stadium this coming Tuesday. The focus is on PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medal winner, who is ranked fourth in the women’s singles.

Fresh from her stint at the All England Open where she reached the second round before falling to the top-ranked An Seyoung from South Korea, Sindhu is ready to make her mark. At the French Open, her prior event, she advanced to the quarter-finals but was defeated by China’s Chen Yufei. The 28-year-old from India will start off at the Swiss Open against Germany’s Yvonne Li, whom she recently encountered at the All England Open, where Li retired after the first game.

Additionally, Aakarshi Kashyap will compete in the main draw for women’s singles, and Malvika Bansod will begin in the qualifiers. Fans can catch the live stream of the matches. In the men’s singles, Lakshya Sen aims to extend his recent success, following semi-final appearances at both the French Open and All England Open. He was ousted in Birmingham by Jonatan Christie of Indonesia who went on to win the tournament.

Currently world number 18, Sen will go up against Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao, over whom he has a 2-1 advantage in their past encounters. India’s former world number 1, Kidambi Srikanth, will face Wang Tzuwei from Chinese Taipei, currently ranked 23rd. Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George are also participating in the main draw, although HS Prannoy will skip the event in Basel.

The men’s doubles will miss the 2023 Swiss Open champions, world number 1 duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, as they will not defend their title this year. On the women’s doubles front, Tanisha Castro and Ashwini Ponnappa, the sixth seed, will challenge Indonesia’s Meilysa Trias Puspita Sari and Rachel Allessya Rose. The eighth-seeded Pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will face off against the American team of Annie Xu and Kerry Xu in the opening round.
