Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, along with Indian badminton players Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth, delivered strong performances as they secured their places in the second round of the Swiss Open Super 300 competition held in Basel, Switzerland on Wednesday.

Sindhu, the 2019 winner, easily overcame Thailand’s Pornpicha Choeikeewong with scores of 21-12 and 21-13. She is set to encounter Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki in her next match. Lakshya Sen, riding on a successful streak with semi-final appearances at both the French Open and the All-England Championships, triumphed over Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao with a 21-19, 15-21, 21-11 victory that took just over an hour.

He’s preparing for his next game against Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei. Former world number one Kidambi Srikanth, who claimed the Swiss Open title in 2015, skillfully defeated world number 24 Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei, 21-17 and 21-18 in less than 45 minutes, marking his sixth victory in their seven encounters.

Srikanth faces a challenging next round against Malaysia’s top player, Lee Zii Jia. In the women’s doubles, India’s sixth-seeded pair, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, emerged victorious in a nail-biting match against Meilysa Trias Puspitasari and Rachel Allessya Rose from Indonesia. The scores were 21-18, 12-21, and 21-19. They are set to play against Japan’s Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato.

Another Indian duo, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra, defeated Huang Yu-Hsun and Liang Ting Yu from Chinese Taipei with a comfortable 21-13 and 21-19. The first set began with Priya and Shurti leading the way until the first intermission. At one point, the score was 12–10, but the Chinese Taipei opponents also put up some resistance to cut the deficit.  After that, though, the Indian pair’s dominance continued because of a combination of shrewd placements and cunning rallies returns.

The result was that the two won the opening set 21–13. The score in the second set, which was competitive, was 3–3, with both teams displaying quality early on. One day earlier, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand from India made it to the second round in women’s doubles by beating Annie Xu and Kerry Xu from the USA with scores of 21-15 and 21-12.

However, three other Indian teams didn’t make it past the first round in women’s doubles. Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam faced defeat against Hong Kong’s fourth-seeded Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam. Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda lost to the top seeds Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti from Indonesia. Additionally, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker were defeated by Indonesia’s Tria Mayasari and Ribka Sugiarto.
