The badminton world was rocked by the recent developments of Malaysian international player Lee Zii Jia. Lee, dropped a bombshell today by announcing an indefinite break from badminton. The 25-year-old badminton shuttler recently dropped out of the top 10 rankings of BWF. This is because of his continuous dismal performances at the top level of badminton. Zia’s career

Lee Zii Jia is a Malaysian professional badminton player. He was the men’s singles gold medalist at the 2019 SEA Games. He was also the winner of the BWF Super 1000 title at the 2021 All England Open. Lee is the 2022 men’s singles Asian champion, winning the title at the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships. His junior career is as vibrant as his senior career. He was a bronze and a silver medalist in the World Junior Championships. Thus, it can be said the recent performances definitely does not put a stamp on the amount of talent that the Malaysian possess.

The sudden decision

Lee has been visibly disappointed with his form which can be seen from his recent interview, “I think for now I will probably temporarily quit badminton.”Jia told the Badminton World Federation, “I will take a break and get rest for a while.”Zii Jia’s shock announcement came just after the former All England champion announced last month the appointment of ex-Malaysian international Wong Tat Meng as his new coaching director. This thing intrigues Malaysian badminton fans finding a correlation between the two events.

Zii Jia has however removed all these speculations aside. According to the Malaysian, “I did well at the Sudirman Cup (last month), but I haven’t done much different after that.” Lee also showed his concerns about the tough battles that he has to fight to once he turned professional. On top of all this, the former world No 2 still has some unfinished business in court. Lee is set to face his former coach Indra Wijaya in a lawsuit battle.
