The esteemed All England Open Badminton Championships 2024, taking place at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, featured exciting second-round games on March 14. Despite most Indian players facing setbacks, Lakshya Sen’s remarkable victory kept India’s chances for a medal alive, as he triumphed over the world’s third-ranked Andres Antonsen, advancing to the quarterfinals.

However, leading players PV Sindhu, the top-ranked pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with the women’s duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, were all eliminated from the competition. Lakshya Sen, who had a slow start to the year, is now showing outstanding performance.

The 22-year-old from India made it to the semifinals at the French Open last week. He clinched an impressive win over the fourth-ranked Anders Antonsen in the round before the quarterfinals. Now, he’s aiming to extend his good run at the All-England Open. During his match against Antonsen, Sen narrowly edged out the first set 24-22.

But then lost the second set 11-21. In the deciding set, Sen recovered from a 13-10 deficit, tied the game at 14-14, and then took seven straight points to win the match. With a final score of 24-22, 11-21, 21-14, Sen secured his spot in the quarterfinals, where he will face Malaysia’s Lee Zi Jia.

In women’s singles, PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, encountered a strong opponent in World No. 1 and top seed An Seyoung from South Korea. After recovering from a knee injury with a strong showing in France, Sindhu brought her best game to Birmingham. Despite her efforts, Sindhu couldn’t overcome An Seyoung, losing 19-21, 11-21.

The doubles category also faced setbacks. Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa missed their chance against China’s Zhang S.X. and Zheng Yu. The Indian duo, eager to boost their rankings for the Paris Olympics, won the first set but couldn’t keep up their form. The Chinese pair adjusted their strategy and claimed victory in three sets, 21-11, 11-21, 11-21.

In men’s doubles, the top-ranked team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty was surprisingly eliminated early on. This loss interrupted Rankireddy and Shetty’s excellent performance at the start of the year, where they had made it to the finals in every tournament played.

After overcoming a strong Indonesian team of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the opening round, they were defeated by another team from Indonesia, M. Fikri and Bagas Maulana. The latter team proved superior and won in straight sets, 16-21, 14-21.

The Olympic qualification period began the previous year on May 1. India’s badminton team, featuring Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, started strong at the All England Open 2024. They won against the experienced world champs from Indonesia, Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on Wednesday.

They kept up their great form after winning the French Open 2024, beating the Indonesian team with scores of 21-18, and 21-14. In women’s doubles, the Indian team of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa beat Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, 21-13, 21-18. They quickly got ahead, leading 11-5 at the break. They then added five more points for 14-5.

Despite the Hong Kong team putting up a fight, Ponnappa and Crasto made several great plays and only made a few errors. They missed two game points but still managed to win the first game 21-13. Next, they’ll play against China’s Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu in the last 16 rounds.
