Double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu moved on to the next stage of the All England Open 2024 after her first-round opponent, Yvonne Li, had to leave the game due to injury in Birmingham on Tuesday. Sindhu, ranked 11th globally, had claimed the first game 21-10 when Li, the world’s 28th-ranked player, opted out of continuing the match.

PV Sindhu recently reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and showed a strong performance against Li. She’s now set to face the winner of the match between the world’s top player An Seyoung from South Korea and Hsu Wenchi from Chinese Taipei, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Sindhu has found Seyoung to be a tough challenger, having never won in their six previous encounters, except for a single game during last year’s Asia Championships in Dubai. On another note, Aakarshi Kashyap from India was defeated by Pai Yupo from Chinese Taipei in her opening round. Pai, the 30th-ranked player, won 21-16, 21-11 over Kashyap, who’s ranked 43rd.

Another upset for India in All England Open 2024

India experienced another upset with HS Prannoy, the top-rated Indian men’s singles player, losing to world number 32, Su Liyang. Prannoy, who’s in the 7th spot, lost his lead and the match with scores of 21-14, 13-21, 13-21. Prannoy’s performance in the season’s five BWF World Tour events has been disappointing for the fourth time in a row.

Earlier this year, he achieved his best result by making it to the semifinals at the Indian Open. Kidambi Srikanth also faced a tough match, losing to world number 1, Viktor Axelsen. The Danish player swiftly defeated Srikanth, who is ranked 16th, with a clear 21-9, 21-9 outcome in just 33 minutes.

The partnership of Treesha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand ended shortly as well after their defeat to Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in straight games. India’s Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy ranked number 1 in men’s doubles, will begin their participation in the tournament on Wednesday.

Live streaming and other information about All England Open 2024

The 2024 All England Open will be shown live on the Badminton World Federation’s own YouTube channel, BWF TV, and also on Jio Cinema. In India, viewers can watch the matches on Sports 18 and Sports 18 HD channels. This tournament, ending on March 17, gives players a chance to earn points that count toward qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The qualifying period for badminton began on May 1 of the previous year.

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, fresh from winning the French Open, are now getting ready for the All England Open Badminton Championships 2024, starting Tuesday in Birmingham, Great Britain. This event is a big deal on the BWF World Tour, being a BWF World 1000 event. So far, only two Indians—Prakash Padukone in 1980 and Pullela Gopichand in 2001—have won the All-England title in men’s singles.

Satwik and Chirag, who are the top-ranked men’s doubles team in the world, hope to be the first Indian pair to grab the title this year. But they’ll have a tough first match against three-time world champions from Indonesia, Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. Satwik and Chirag have won 3 matches and lost 4 against them so far. PV Sindhu, who’s won two Olympic medals, leads India’s hopes in the women’s singles after playing at the French Open earlier this year.
