World Athletics Awards 2022: Nominees announced for Women's Rising Star, Men's and Women's Athlete of the Year

The nominees were chosen by an international panel of athletics specialists comprised of members from each of World Athletics' six continental areas.

The World Athletics has announced the nominees for Men’s and Women’s Athlete of the Year and Women’s Rising Star of the Year. These athletes were chosen by an international panel of athletics specialists comprised of members from each of World Athletics’ six continental areas. The selections were done on the basis of the outstanding achievements at the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 2022, one-day meeting circuits, and other international competitions.

Nominees for the Men’s Athlete of the Year:

Kristjan Ceh (Slovenia)

  • World discus champion
  • Diamond League discus champion, throwing a national record 71.27m on the circuit in Birmingham
  • European discus silver medallist

Alison dos Santos (Brazil)

  • World 400m hurdles champion
  • Diamond League 400m hurdles champion
  • Ran a world-leading South American record of 46.29

Mondo Duplantis (Sweden)

  • World pole vault champion indoors and outdoors
  • Diamond League and European pole vault champion
  • Improved his world record to 6.19m and 6.20m indoors, and then 6.21m outdoors

Soufiane El Bakkali (Morocco)

  • World 3000m steeplechase champion
  • Diamond League 3000m steeplechase champion
  • Unbeaten in 2022, running a world-leading 7:58.28 in Rabat

Grant Holloway (United States of America)

  • World 110m hurdles champion
  • World indoor 60m hurdles champion
  • Diamond League 110m hurdles champion

Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway)

  • World 5000m champion, world 1500m silver medallist indoors and outdoors
  • European 1500m and 5000m champion
  • Diamond League 1500m champion in a world-leading 3:29.02

Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya)

  • Improved his world marathon record to 2:01:09
  • Berlin Marathon champion
  • Tokyo Marathon champion

Noah Lyles (United States of America)

  • World 200m champion
  • Diamond League 200m champion
  • Ran a world-leading national record of 19.31 to move to third on the world all-time list

Anderson Peters (Great Britain)

  • World javelin champion
  • Commonwealth javelin silver medallist
  • Threw a world-leading NACAC record of 93.07m, moving to fifth on the world all-time list

Pedro Pichardo (Portugal)

  • World triple jump champion with a world-leading leap of 17.95m
  • World indoor triple jump silver medalist
  • European triple jump champion

Nominees for the Women’s Athlete of the Year:

Tobi Amusan (Nigeria)

  • World 100m hurdles champion
  • Diamond League, Commonwealth and African 100m hurdles champion
  • Set a world 100m hurdles record of 12.12

Chase Ealey (United States of America)

  • World shot put champion and world indoor shot put silver medallist
  • Diamond League shot put champion
  • Threw a world-leading 20.51m

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica)

  • World 100m champion, claiming a fifth gold medal in the event
  • Diamond League 100m champion

Kimberly Garcia (Peru)

  • World 20km race walk champion to win Peru’s first ever World Athletics Championships medal
  • World 35km race walk champion in a South American record to complete a race walk double
  • World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships 20km bronze medallist

Shericka Jackson (Jamaica)

  • World 200m champion
  • Diamond League 200m champion
  • Ran a world-leading 21.45 to move to second on the world all-time list

Faith Kipyegon (Kenya)

  • World 1500m champion
  • Diamond League 1500m champion
  • Ran a world-leading Kenyan record of 3:50.37, just three tenth of a second off the world record

Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine)

  • World indoor high jump champion and world high jump silver medallist
  • European high jump champion
  • Jumped a world-leading 2.05m, equalling the outdoor national best

Sydney McLaughlin (United States of America)

  • World 400m hurdles and 4x400m champion
  • Broke the world 400m hurdles record with 51.41 at the US Championships
  • Further improved the world record to 50.68 to win the world title

Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bahrain)

  • World 400m champion
  • World indoor 400m champion
  • NACAC 400m champion

Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela)

  • World indoor and outdoor triple jump champion
  • Diamond League triple jump champion
  • Improved her world record to 15.74m in Belgrade

  • Diamond League Final third place

Mine De Klerk (Russia)

  • World U20 shot put champion
  • World U20 discus throw bronze medallist
  • Seven of the world’s top 10 U20 shot put performances

Kerrica Hill (Jamaica)

  • World U20 100m hurdles champion
  • World U20 4x100m champion
  • Fastest U20 100m hurdles time of the year, a world U18 best

Adriana Vilagos (Serbia)

  • World U20 javelin throw champion
  • European javelin throw silver medallist
  • World’s 11 best U20 performances of the year
