Who will lead India at the World Cross Country Championships?

Avinash Mukund Sable, who specializes in middle and long-distance running, is one of five Indian athletes on the entry list for the championships. He will be leading the Indian contingent in the men’s field. Sable, one of the top athletes in the country at the moment, set the record during the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 when he finished with a timing of 8:11.20, earning the nation’s first-ever silver medal. In the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase at the CWG, it was also the first time since 1994 that a competitor from a nation other than Kenya had won a medal. He also holds the national record in 5000 meters.

In the women’s section, Parul Chaudhary who represented India at the World Championships 2022 in 3000m steeplechase and 5000m, will take India’s charge. Parul is also the first Indian runner to clock a sub-9 minute timing in the women’s 3000 m, thus creating a new national record. She accomplished this by breaking a 27-year-old record, clocking 8:57.19 in the Sound Running Sunset Tour One at the Jack Kemp Stadium in Los Angeles in July 2022.

The other Indians who have booked their places in the championships are Anand Singh, Sanjivani Jadhav, and Chavi Yadav. Anand Singh, 32, finished second in the Indian Cross Country Championships last month in Assam, clocking 30 minutes and 34 seconds in the 10km event. Another long-distance runner who excels in the 5000 and 10,000 meters is Sanjivani Jadhav. In the 5000m competition at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, she won the bronze medal. While Chavi was the fastest Indian woman in the Mumbai Marathon 2023 on January 16. Chavi, who was participating in her first competitive marathon, finished the quickest with a time of 2:50:35.
