The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships’ sprint event has seen Rhasidat Adeleke earn the first sprint medal for Ireland. After breaking her own Irish record for the distance a fortnight ago in a time of 50.33 seconds, Adeleke, 20, built on a strong start to the season by winning 400m silver at the American collegiate indoor championships at the Convention Centre in Albuquerque, New Mexico, last night.
The Tallaght AC athlete representing the University of Texas won her portion of the split final in a time of 50.45, with an initial 200-meter time of 23:07. At the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, she took home a silver medal in the 4 x 100-meter relay with Molly Scott, Gina Akpe-Moses, Ciara Neville, and Patience Jumbo-Gala, and a gold in the 200-meter race at the 2018 European Athletics U18 Championships in Gyr, Hungary.
Everyone predicted that another Irish record would be necessary to win, and Rhasidat Adeleke proved everyone wrong by breaking another Irish record in the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Adeleke recorded a sensational victory in the 400-meter final while competing at the University of Texas in Austin, becoming the first Irish woman to win an outdoor NCAA sprint title as a result.
