The World U20 Wrestling Championships were underway with 31 Indian wrestlers competing for medals from August 15-21 in Sofia, Bulgaria. An approximate of 600 wrestlers around the world participated in the Championships, with India hoping for an improved after the previous edition. The country finished 11th, with four silvers and seven bronze in Ufa, Russia.
India ensured a better performance winning 16 medals, with Antim Panghal creating history. She became the first Indian to win a gold medal in a Junior World Wrestling Championships. This helped India finish second, behind Japan in freestyle falling short by a margin of 70 points. The contingent included 11 in men’s freestyle and 10 in women’s freestyle. The showing in Bulgaria earned India a total of 112 points, becoming the nation’s best ever performance in the tournament’s history.
