Christopher Nilsen, also known as Chris Nilsen, is a pole vaulter from the United States. He used to be a high jumper before switching to pole vaulting full-time. He won the silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Besides this, he is a world championship silver medalist and bronze medalist at the indoors, having won both in the year 2022. He is a two-time NCAA champion in outdoor pole vault having won in 2018 and 2019. In 2016, he was named the Gatorade Missouri Boy’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Nilsen was named Summit League Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2017 and Summit League Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2017. He received recognition on The Bowerman Watch List for the whole outdoor season in 2017.
Nilsen made his professional debut as a Nike-sponsored athlete in July 2020. On June 21, Nilsen was the only pole vaulter to clear 5.90 meters, earning first place and a spot on the USA Olympic team in 2021. He increased his personal best by two centimeters, leaping 5.97 meters at the Tokyo Olympics to win his first Olympic medal ,i.e., the silver. Nilsen broke the indoor North American Record with a jump of 6.02 meters on February 5, 2022 at the Golden Pole Vault Special Meeting in Tourcoing, France. At the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, he took home the bronze medal. With a best jump of 5.94 meters, he finished second in the 2022 World Championships in Oregon after losing to Armand Duplantis.
