American track and field athlete Trey Cunningham specializes primarily in the 110-meter hurdles. He won the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. His second-place finish at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships secured him a spot in the 2022 World Athletics Championships. At the Worlds in Oregon, he placed second to Grant Holloway, the silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, with a time of 13.08 seconds. Additionally, he received the ACC Indoor Men’s Track Performer of the Year award in 2022. The Track & Field News chose him as National Athlete of the Year in 2022.
He identifies himself as a nerdy kid who loved reading and playing video games as a child. In middle school, Trey started participating in sports, starting with basketball, which he continued to play through his junior year at Winfield City High. But his passion for track and field blossomed after accompanying his cousin Olivia Atkinson to practice in seventh school. Cunningham became the most highly regarded and wanted hurdler in the country by the time he was a senior. He also set the U20 World Record for the 60-meter hurdles in addition to winning 20 solo Alabama state championships (four more in relays).
Trey claims that because his family is so fiercely competitive in every way, he is inherently competitive. Even when playing the board game Monopoly, he would constantly check to see how his scores compared to those of my two close cousins. Competition was constantly present, even when running to the trampoline. Shelly Pyles Cunningham, Trey’s mother, still retains the record for the most assists in a single season at the University of Alabama, where she played point guard. Brad, his father, coached football and basketball, while Susan, his sister, played women’s basketball at Alabama and Auburn. Olan Cunningham, Trey’s grandfather, was a football player for Auburn.
