Joe Kovacs was born on June 28, 1989, in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Joey used to be the discus and shot put champion at his high school, which he graduated from in 2007. He also wrote history for the Bethlehem Catholic, obtaining two gold medals. Additionally, Joe had the opportunity to interact with the shot put champion Reese Hoffa while at high school camp. During his senior year of high school track and field, he won PIAA gold in the discus and shot put. His winning shot put distance of 64 feet, 10.75 inches (19.7803 meters) is a PIAA Class AA state record.

Joe was too short to glide, so Hoof suggested him to spin instead. He went to Penn State University. He graduated in 2011 after majoring in Earth Science and Finance. As a university student, he envisaged himself in either of these two fields, but not shot putting. Joe was a four-time All-American while a student. He received coaching from Danna Wagner during his first year. At Penn State University, T.J. Crater had the opportunity to mentor him as well.

Joe attended the US Olympic Trials in 2012 while sporting a Penn State jersey. He came in fourth after throwing a personal best, however, couldn’t make it to the squad.  After meeting famous UCLA coach Art Venegas in late 2012, Joe began learning from him. In January 2013, he finally arrived at the Chula Vista Olympic training facility.  His coach chose the training center precisely because of its optimal facilities, accommodations, meal programs, weight room, sports science, and personnel. Joe improved under Art’s guidance, raising his PR from 69 feet to 74 feet.

Joey then went on to win the World Championships in 2015. Likewise, he won the Diamond League Championship in 2015. At the 2017 IAAF World Championship and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Joe also took home the silver medal. He has a personal best of 23.23 meters, which makes him the second best athlete of all time in Shot Put. He is presently being coached by his wife Ashley since 2019.
