British sprinter Zharnel Hughes, who was born in Anguilla on July 13, 1995, excels in the 100 and 200 metres. Since 2015, he has participated internationally for Great Britain in the Olympic Games. He also participated in World Athletics, and European Athletics competitions, as well as for England at the Commonwealth Games. He was born and reared in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla.

Zharnel Hughes achieved notable success while competing for Anguilla in his childhood. He took the home victories at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships, and CARIFTA Games. In the 100 and 200 metres, he holds the national records for Anguilla. At the 2015 World Championships in Athletics, Hughes finished sixth in the 200-meter final after switching sides. His seasons in 2016 and 2017 were hampered by injury, and he was eliminated in the first round of both the 2016 and 2017 World Athletics Championships.

Following Ujah’s conviction for a doping offence by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on February 18, 2022, it was announced that Hughes and his colleagues CJ Ujah, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, and Richard Kilty would lose their second-place finish in the 4 100-meter relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

With a time of 9.83 seconds as of June 2023, Hughes holds the British record over 100 metres and is the second-fastest European ever. Hughes’ personal best time over 200 m is 20.02 s. With a time of 20.02, he is the fifth-fastest sprinter in British history over 200 metres and the seventeenth-fastest in Europe. Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Delano Williams are among the club members who train with Hughes at the Racers Track Club in Jamaica.
