CARIFTA Games 2023: Top performers, Team Standings & more

With an astounding 78 medals, including 40 gold, 22 silver, and 16 bronze, Jamaica won the CARIFTA Games 2023, which were held in Nassau, Bahamas, between April 8 and 10, 2023. The participants excelled in a variety of sports, with well-known competitors including Alana Reid, Alexis James, Roshawn Clarke, and Jaydon Hibbert winning their respective individual competitions. The Bahamas (46) and Trinidad and Tobago (25) finished second and third, respectively, at the 50th CARIFTA Games.

In the girls’ U20 100m, the co-captain Alana Reid of Jamaica, who also led the U20 division, put up a spectacular effort to win her first CARIFTA Games title. Except for one age-group sprint final, Jamaican athletes dominated all of them, showcasing their hurdling prowess. Alexis James, the world U20 silver medalist, distinguished by setting the Games record in the U20 100-meter hurdles with a timing of 13.06 (0.9 m/s). James topped her team, with Asharria Ulett finishing in second with a personal best of 13.24.

Michelle Smith, a Virgin Islands representative, also distinguished herself as a strong performer at the CARIFTA Games. With a strong performance, the World U20 Championships finalist which took place in Cali, won the U20 girls’ 400-meter hurdles race in 57.69 seconds. With a time of 2:09.72, Smith completed an uncommon double by winning the 800m race in addition.

Jamaica extended its winning streak by taking three of the four 400-meter age group finals. With four convincing victories in the 4x400m relays, the Jamaican relay teams ruled the tournament. With a stunning victory in the boys’ U20 event, the Jamaican team brought the Games to a close. They finished in a record-breaking time of 3:07.68, over two seconds faster than Trinidad and Tobago, who came in second.

About the CARIFTA Games

The Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) established the annual athletics tournament known as the CARIFTA Games. The games feature track and field competitions like sprint races, hurdles, medium distance track competitions, jumping and throwing competitions, and relays. They were originally held in 1972. The under-17 and under-20 are the two age groups at the Games.
