He started running or walking the 6 km (3.7 mi) distance between his house and school when he was six years old because his village lacked a transportation system. He joined the Indian Army’s 5 Mahar regiment after completing his 12th-grade year and was subsequently assigned to the Siachen Glacier in 2013–2014. The northwestern Rajasthan deserts in 2014–2015, and Sikkim starting in 2015.

At his co-worker’s urging, he first competed in the inter-army cross-country race in 2015, after which he switched to the steeplechase under the guidance of coach Amrish Kumar. Before joining the national camp and receiving training from Nikolai Snesarev, Sable, who was overweight, was able to shed 20 kg (44 lbs) in three months. The training regimen Snesarev was following in 2018 did not “suit” him, so Sable returned to train with Kumar.
