The London Stadium will host a Diamond League meeting in 2023 after a three-year gap, UK Athletics (UKA) has confirmed. The previous editions in 2021 and 2020 did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic and high costs to convert the venue from a football to athletics event. The stadium is the home stadium of the English Premier League club West Ham United. The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham hosted the 2022 Diamond League meeting back in May.

“We are so excited to be returning to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park next year,” said Cherry Alexander, UKA’s strategic lead for major events. “The London Stadium holds such happy memories for us and seeing athletics return to this iconic venue is going to be fantastic for the best supporters in the world.”

“It’s also great to once again be inviting youngsters from across London and the local community to participate in our Festival of Athletics. There is something for everyone to enjoy and take part in over the four days and we can’t wait to bring the sport back to the capital.”

Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, added, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome athletics back to the Stadium next summer, with the Diamond League sitting alongside our world-class calendar of events for 2023. In addition, the activities planned across the weekend of this prestigious meet will engage the whole community across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, as we continue to deliver on the legacy of the 2012 Games.”

Athletes will begin their preparations in London ahead of the World Championships in Budapest from August 19-27. It will also be the first venue after the completion of the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris from July 8-17. The Wanda Diamond League consists of 32 Diamond Disciplines, following a championship style model. Athletes earn points at the 13 series meetings to qualify for the final of their discipline. Athletes are awarded 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for ranking 1st to 8th respectively.

The top 6 in the field events, top eight for 100m-800m and the top 10 for 1500m and long distances will qualify for the Final. Winner of each Diamond Discipline at the Final is crowned “Diamond League Champion” and awarded a Diamond Trophy, along with a wild card for the World Athletics Championships
