The United States will be taking on a struggling Bulgarian side in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League on Saturday. Both sides have been experiencing contrasting fortunes so far in the tournament. The USA are sitting near the top of the table, while their opponents are second from the bottom. On paper, the Americans will be the clear favourites for the upcoming clash. However, Bulgaria cannot be written off so easily, as they will be filled with confidence after opening their account against Iran in the last encounter.
Sitting third on the table, the USA are just a point behind the top two sides – France and Poland. They currently have 14 points and are only one point shy of the leaders. On the other hand, Bulgaria had a forgettable start to the tournament after losing the opening four fixtures. However, they got their first victory in the tournament against Iran in the last match. Hence, they will be brimming with confidence, however, they are still way off the pace, having collected a mere five points from five games till now.

A fresh new format was enforced for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League ahead of the 2022 edition. The revised format will feature 16 men’s teams who will compete in pools of 8 teams during the preliminary round. Eight teams will then advance to the competition’s final knockout round. The Finals will include the seven strongest teams, with the finals host — Italy — entering the knockout round as the top-placed team. It will consist of eight matches in total – four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and bronze and gold medal matches.
