Conor McGregor has stated that he will fight at welterweight once he returns to the UFC sometime this year. The Irishman is rehabilitating from a broken leg sustained in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier last summer and has been gunning for a fight with 170lb champion Kamaru Usman. He has been recovering from the injury since July and has lately resumed boxing training in Dublin.

When speaking with Mirror Fighting, McGregor said he will return to the welterweight division. In contrast, he competed at lightweight in four of his previous five fights, including earning the world championship at UFC 205 in 2016.

McGregor said, “Straight back into training. I’m looking forward to getting back into the octagon – we’ll see what happens, the leg’s getting better every day, I think 170 is where I’m aiming for, I feel good at this weight.”

He also chuckled off ideas that he and Henry Cejudo should settle their current social media dispute in the octagon.

He and Cejudo have been arguing on Twitter in current days, but when probed by Mirror Fighting if the previous flyweight and bantamweight champ was a potential future opponent, he motioned “no” while chuckling.

Conor McGregor facing charges

McGregor subsequently told a fan as he exited Blanchardstown District Court that he was “working hard” and “getting better day by day.” Following his detention last month for suspected risky driving, he appeared in court to face four accusations.

The case was rescheduled for June 23, when he will face two accusations of hazardous driving, as well as failing to show a licence, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance. McGregor is presently planning a comeback in the second part of the year, following a lengthy period of inactivity due to injuries.

He has resumed training at Crumlin Boxing Gym and is anticipated to be completely battling by the end of April. UFC President Dana White has guaranteed Edwards the next welterweight title chance but is simultaneously reluctant to rule out a bout for McGregor.

The Irishman has previously won world titles at featherweight and lightweight, and he would create history if he won a third. However, he would be a huge underdog against Usman, who hasn’t lost in the UFC and has appeared untouchable in previous battles.
