UFC President Dana White has revealed that former two-time undisputed welterweight title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson declined a potential fight with undefeated Irish contender Ian Machado Garry. This revelation comes after Machado Garry’s dominant decision win over Neil Magny at UFC 292 where he showcased his striking prowess.

The bout between Machado Garry and Magny saw the Dubliner improve his undefeated record to 13-0 securing his sixth consecutive win in the Octagon. Throughout the three-round clash, Machado Garry landed brutal leg kicks that resulted in multiple knockdowns against his opponent.

Following his impressive victory, Machado Garry wasted no time and issued a callout to veteran striker Stephen Thompson. He expressed his interest in a five-round clash with Thompson. Hoping to test his skills against the experienced kickboxer in his next UFC appearance.

However, Dana White revealed that Thompson declined the fight offer. White emphasized that matchmaking is a central aspect of the UFC’s operations and fighters’ decisions impact the matchups that get booked.

Thompson has been out of action since December of the previous year. His planned fight against Michel Pereira at UFC 291 in July fell through when Pereira missed weight by four pounds. Thompson chose not to proceed with a catchweight bout against Pereira. He has been eyeing a return to the Octagon with a potential matchup against former division champion and former pound-for-pound number one Kamaru Usman gaining attention for an end-of-year clash.

His performance against Magny has garnered significant attention. UFC President Dana White has indicated that the 25-year-old Irish fighter could potentially fight at UFC 295 in November at Madison Square Garden. Additionally, with a victory in his next Octagon appearance, Machado Garry could earn the opportunity for an Irish homecoming in Dublin’s capital.

The decision to turn down the fight against Machado Garry showcases Thompson’s strategic approach to his career. Thompson is likely considering various factors such as timing, preparation, and the overall landscape of the welterweight division.

Matchups play a pivotal role in shaping fighters’ journeys and their paths to title contention. While Thompson’s rejection of the fight disappointed some fans who were excited about a potential clash with Machado Garry. It’s a reminder that the sport is driven by the choices made by both athletes and promoters.
