Conor McGregor is the larger-than-life Irish superstar. He has always been a polarizing figure in the world of mixed martial arts. Known for his brash personality, flashy lifestyle, and exceptional fighting skills. McGregor has captured the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. However, after a series of setbacks both in and out of the Octagon questions loom over his fighting future. Leaving fans wondering if the once-dominant Notorious is truly done.

At UFC 291, the main event featured a highly anticipated rematch between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. Gaethje’s spectacular head-kick knockout of Poirier earned him the coveted “BMF” title. But it also reignited his rivalry with McGregor. The two fighters have a history of exchanging verbal jabs and celebrating each other’s losses. McGregor couldn’t resist taking a shot at Gaethje’s claim to being the BMF in the sport.

In a typical McGregor fashion, the Irish fighter took to Twitter to dismiss Gaethje’s BMF title and express his desire to face Michael Chandler next. The tweet caught the attention of fans and media alike but it also raised concerns about McGregor’s focus and commitment to his fighting career.

Conor McGregor’s uncertain future

The truth is McGregor’s journey in recent years has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. His meteoric rise to stardom culminated in becoming a two-division champion in the UFC achieving unprecedented success and fortune. However, the fame and riches seemed to take a toll on the Notorious as his focus shifted towards business ventures and exhibition bouts like the infamous boxing match against Floyd Mayweather.

In the UFC, McGregor has struggled to find consistency. While he achieved a stunning 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo to claim the featherweight title in 2015. His ambitious move to challenge for the lightweight title led to mixed results. The back-to-back wars with Nate Diaz showcased McGregor’s warrior spirit but exposed some vulnerabilities in his game.

In 2016, McGregor made history by becoming the first fighter to hold two UFC titles simultaneously when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship. But his next venture into the boxing ring against Mayweather in 2017 seemed to distract him from his UFC career.

Since then, McGregor’s Octagon performances have been marked by highs and lows. While he secured a dominant TKO victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January 2020. He suffered a shocking second-round TKO loss to Dustin Poirier later that year. The two fighters would meet again in July 2021 and once again. Poirier emerged victorious this time via a doctor’s stoppage after McGregor suffered a gruesome leg injury.

The loss to Poirier marked the Notorious’ third defeat in his last four UFC bouts. He raised questions about his commitment to the sport. While he claims to have fought out his UFC contract at UFC 291. McGregor’s inactivity and lack of commitment to rejoin the USADA drug testing pool a requirement for fighters before competing, leave many puzzled about his future.

Fighters are continually vying for title shots and climbing the ranks with impressive performances. With McGregor’s hiatus from the Octagon contenders like Gaethje and Michael Chandler have been making their cases for title opportunities.

McGregor’s tweet aimed at Gaethje and Chandler showcased his trademark bravado and trash-talking antics. Still, as the lightweight division evolves, his words carry little weight without action to back them up. The question remains whether McGregor is truly willing to reestablish himself as a dominant force in the UFC and make another title run.
