Oliveira is focused on action and is prepared to face off against the former champ-champ whenever McGregor decides to step away from the keyboard and into the cage.
The desire for a showdown between Oliveira and McGregor has been brewing for a while. After capturing the lightweight title with a second-round knockout of Michael Chandler in 2021. Oliveira solidified his position as one of the best lightweights in the sport. Impressive submission victories over Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje further cemented his status. McGregor had his sights set on Oliveira but a mishap on the scale led to Oliveira being stripped of the title putting their potential clash on hold.
Speaking on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Oliveira made it clear that he is more than willing to face McGregor and is just waiting for the Irishman to agree to the fight. He expressed his readiness by saying, “What’s happening is that I’m here — I’m just waiting for him. All he needs to do is tell me the place and the time, and I’ll be there.”
Oliveira is currently preparing for a lightweight title rematch with Islam Makhachev. It is scheduled for October 21 at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi. If Oliveira emerges victorious it could set the stage for a potential matchup with McGregor in the future.
In contrast to Oliveira’s eagerness to step into the cage. McGregor has been vocal on social media targeting various fighters from different weight classes. He recently called out Justin Gaethje and had some choice words for Jake Paul and Nate Diaz. However, Oliveira remains unfazed by McGregor’s antics and is focused on the possibility of facing him regardless of weight class.
“170, 183 [pounds], doesn’t matter,” Oliveira said. “All he needs to do is stop and do it.”
