Seeded 28th Yoshihito Nishioka has been suffering badly for the last couple of months and he is badly out of form and in the hope of gaining some important wins at the Madrid Open. He has barely made it to the later stages of any of the tournaments he has played in the last few months, from a round of 16 finish at the Delray Beach Open and the Barcelona Open to a first-round knock-out at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, and the Mexican Open. His last great start came way back in January at the Adelaide International where he made it to the semi-finals where he withdrew from the match due to injury against Sebastian Korda. In the ongoing Madrid Open, he beat Molcan in the first-round matchup by 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Seeded 5th Andrey Rublev hasn’t been in good touch lately and has been losing all the recent tournaments he has played in. He will be adamant to make a change in fortune and perform well at the Madrid Open. He couldn’t make it past the first stage mark in most of his last tournaments, losing to Kokkinakis at the Adelaide International 2, and to Fritz at the Cincinnati Masters in the second round. He made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open thereby losing to Djokovic after beating the likes of Rune, Evans, Ruusuvuori, and Thiem. In the recently played Srpska Open, he made it to the final losing to Lajovic but he filled that void by lifting the title at the Monte-Carlo Masters beating the likes of Rune, Fritz, Struff, Khachanov, and Munar. In the ongoing Madrid Open, he beat Wawrinka in the first-round matchup by 5-7, 4-6.
