Seeded 28th Yoshihito Nishioka has been suffering badly for the last couple of months and he is badly out of form and in the hope of gaining some important wins at the Madrid Open. He has barely made it to the later stages of any of the tournaments he has played in the last few months, from a round of 16 finish at the Delray Beach Open and the Barcelona Open to a first-round knock-out at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, and the Mexican Open. His last great start came way back in January at the Adelaide International where he made it to the semi-finals where he withdrew from the match due to injury against Sebastian Korda.
Alex Molcan has been in decent form recently but lacks a lot of consistency and will be desperate to make the most out of his opportunity at the Madrid Open. He hasn’t made it to the later stages of any of the major tournaments he has played in the last couple of months. He lost to Auger-Aliassime in the Australian Open in the second round and also in the opening round to Thiem at the Argentina Open. At the ASB Classic and Maharashtra Open, he lost to Halys and Djere both in the opening round respectively. In his recent tournaments, he has made it to the round of 32 stage in both the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open and also made it to the semis of the Srpska Open losing to Rublev. In the ongoing Madrid Open, he beat Wu Yibing in the first-round matchup by 2-6, 4-6.
