Until 2017, Aryna Sabalenka was an unknown in the world of tennis. Still a teenager at the time, the Belarusian tennis player spent her days mainly on the ITF circuit and in some lower-level WTA singles competitions. So when she and Aliaksandra Sasnovich reached the final of the Fed Cup that year, despite both being ranked below the top 75, fans were taken by surprise. Although she advanced to the semifinals, Karolna Pliskova defeated her in straight sets. Later, she was defeated by Paula Badosa in the Cincinnati Open’s opening round. Sabalenka achieved a career-high rating of No. 2 despite the defeat. That year, she also reached achieved the world number one ranking with Elise Mertens.
